GTE materials corrosion life considered in Perm design bureau

27.11.2018

The scientific and technical board (STB) meeting on a topic of “Challenges in the development of computational and experimental procedure to evaluate corrosion life of major and critical parts materials in turbofans” was held in November 2018 in UEC-Aviadvigatel.

The STB brought together representatives from industry R&D Institutes, institutes of the Russian Academy of Science, the United Engine Corporation companies, such as Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Science, VIAM, Central Institute of Aviation Motors n.a. Baranov, Institute of Continuous Media Mechanics of the Ural Branch of Russian Academy of Science, Institute of Strength Physics and Materials Science; Ural Federal University n.a. B.N. Yeltsin, the first President of Russia; Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU), Scientific & Production Association on Power-Generating Equipment Research and Designing n.a. I.I. Polsunov (NPO TsKTI).

Greeting the audience, Alexander Inozemtsev, General Designer of UEC-Aviadvigatel, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, focuses on the applicability of the STB topic. “Unfortunately, there is no in Russia a ready-to-use procedure to provide corrosion life of metallic parts within GT engines and GT units” he says. “Starting with R&D for the PD-35 Engine Project, we have figured out, that the highest running hours will be combined with ultra-high temperatures of hot section in this engine. This will inevitably entail corrosion processes in metallic parts and assemblies. A major challenge will be to predict corrosion life of hot section, and to improve the engine design and materials.  Through cooperative efforts, we should address this challenge, in order to match as a competitor for the global market of aircraft engine-building”.

During the STB specialists of Perm Design Bureau, VIAM, NPO TsKTI, PNRPU have made their presentations, summarizing their practical experience in the research of superalloy parts operation under corrosive exposure. These presentations have arisen much interest and sharing of opinions between board attendees. The specialists of UEC-Aviadvigatel’s Design Bureau have tasked the representatives of academic and sectoral sciences with specific targets, addressing which will determine a success of PD-35 project implementation, including:

Develop the set of mathematical models to evaluate GTE corrosion life, which consider different types of corrosion damages;

Focus efforts on research of quantitative characteristics of corrosion damage initiation and propagation, their growth and merge, crack formation and growth;

Create databank of material corrosion properties, similar to the databank of structural characteristics (to be created within the project of PD-14 engine for MS-21);

Think over the plan of research of composites corrosion properties, as the portion of composites within aircraft engines is increasing.

The recent scientific and technical board became one of first steps towards single development strategy of computational and experimental procedure to evaluate corrosion life of turbojet engine major and critical parts.
