Graduate students of Samara National Research University named after Academician S.P. Korolev (SNIU) have completed an internship at UEC-Aviadvigatel JSC (a part of Rostec United Engine Corporation).
Three students from Samara University, who won individual the All-Russian Student Olympiad-2023 in the discipline Aircraft Engines and Power Plants were offered an internship at UEC-Aviadvigatel by the Design Bureau’s management.
“This is the first time we have invited students from another region for an internship. Hopefully, this will become a new tradition of the Perm Design School and will help to engage the most talented engineering students in the country at our Design Bureau,” says Aleksandr Inozemtsev, Managing Director – General Designer, UEC-Aviadvigatel.
Certificates for a two-week internship at the Design Bureau were awarded to Ivan Konov, Aleksandr Grushev and Aleksey Yakimov, 6th year SNIU students, who study in the aircraft and rocket engines design. The certificate provides for an individual internship program, personal tutor, wide range of introductory tours around the Perm engine enterprises, and etc. In accordance with the subject of their graduation projects, the students have chosen Turbine and Combustor Divisions for their internships.
Young colleagues from Samara were interested in the Design Bureau structure created by the founder of the design & engineering school Pavel Soloviev in accordance with a principle of the engine node-by-node design and development. Designers, structural analysts and test engineers available in each major division is one of the advantages of Perm Bureau. Another apparent advantage emphasized by the young men is a joint design bureau, pilot and serial production at one site.
“Of course, it is impossible to study the whole experience of the Perm Design Bureau in two weeks. Therefore, a main focus of the internship was to obtain general information about the Perm propulsion engineering “cluster”. In addition, we found it very useful to get a fresh look at the subject of our diploma projects and the ways of their implementation. Colleagues from UEC-Aviadvigatel were so generous to share their thoughts with us,” Alexey Yakimov says.
The interns have got an understanding of the pilot production and serial production facilities operation at UEC-Aviadvigatel; they were introduced to the complete turbine blade production cycle, from ceramic cores and castings manufacturing to the application of protective coatings. Young engineers have got to know about an additive manufacturing, engine assembly, operation of test rigs; they have participated in combustion chamber tests.
“We saw significant differences in the production process at Perm enterprises. More advanced production processes have been mastered here. I was in training in the Combustor Division, where I was managed to know about the different combustion and turbulence models, specific computation procedures, and software. Before the visit to Perm, my supervisor advised me on what issues to pay special attention to. Perm and Samara combustion chamber developers work in close cooperation and know the best practices to learn from each other,” notes Aleksandr Grushev.
There is some time left before the diploma project presentation, so that the students can make good use of the knowledge they have gained at UEC-Aviadvigatel. “I was able to not only study Ph.D. thesis and papers of Perm design experts, but also talk to them about what I'm interested in. It was very important to understand how the subject of my diploma could be implemented in Perm Design Bureau. I have learned loads of useful information,” says Ivan Konov.
According to the young men, they would recommend other students to undergo the internship in Perm: it is useful to get to know different companies in the industry – it broadens your horizons and enriches your experience.
