Bypass two-shaft turbofan engine was designed in 1971.
In 1972, it was put into serial production at Rybinsk Motors. Altogether, 1500 engines were produced.
Compared with the D-30, the D-30KU has increased bypass ratio and turbine inlet temperature. The first compressor spool has 3 stages, the second one – 11stages, the turbine – 6 stages.
The developers of the D-30KU were the first in the domestic aviation industry to use a bucket-type thrust reverser unit which didn’t affect the engine parameters at forward thrust. For more than a decade, the D-30KU stayed ahead in the world market in its thrust category (10-12 tons).
