UEC-VIADVIGATEL TAKES PART IN TECHNOPROM-2023

UEC-Aviadvigatel JSC (part of Rostech United Engine Corporation) has presented an analysis of the potentials for an application of the synthetic aviation fuels within gas-turbine engines at the 10th TECHNOPROM-2023 International Forum.

Perm Design Bureau has participated in the forum as a member of the UEC delegation. Aleksey Sipatov, Dr.-Ing., Head of the Combustor Department at UEC-Aviadvigatel, has made a presentation on the subject of SAF Application in the Aircraft GTE Combustors during the Synthetic Fuels panel discussion.

“The fight against global climate change caused by anthropogenic factors, including fossil-fueled air transport, is making international organizations, such as ICAO, IATA, and etc., to focus on reducing the carbon footprint left by aviation. This is an acute issue, and UEC-Aviadvigatel as a GTE developer could not afford to stand back,” Mr. Sipatov says.

Today Perm designers are considering an opportunity to use SAF in the aircraft engines as a research & application long-term task. But it's no less relevant because of that.

For now, airplanes produce only 2.5% of the CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. But the rapid growth in air traffic, according to some predictions, could lead to a significant increase in the aviation contribution to the process.

To reduce the carbon footprint of air transportation, various airlines, aircraft manufacturers and industry associations have committed to working together to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

“UEC-Aviadvigatel initiated studies into alternative fuels for industrial GTEs twenty years ago. Therefore, this problem is not new and is known to us. We believe that in the next 25 to 30 years, SAF, which properties are as close as possible to conventional kerosene, and a mixture of kerosene and SAF will become the most likely and sustainable fuel for civil aviation, and will allow to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from air transport,” comments Aleksandr Inozemtsev, Deputy General Director of UEC for Perm Engines Research & Production Complex Management, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
